Unit 5 Exercise

1.Compare and contrast the Loving Kindness exercise and the Subtle mind exercise. Explain your experience including the benefits, frustrations etc.
I believe I gained more benefit from the loving kindness exercise. Perhaps I wasn't in the proper mind set for the subtle mind exercise it just seemed like I could not focus as much on what were we asked to do. I kept waiting for the pauses to end, I felt as though the breaks were too long. I will try this exercise again, it is something I really need to focus on.

2. Discuss the connection of the spiritual wellness to mental and physical wellness. Explain how the connection is manifested in your personal life.
Having spiritual wellness, however an individual defines it means to have a solid focus, a rock, a guiding point, a purpose. I am a Christian,my beliefs serve as a guide for my life. My spiritual well-being helps me to stay focused, mental and physical wellness are connected because of my spiritual grounding.

Unit 4 Exercise:

Unit 4:

Question 1- Describe your experience. (Did you find it beneficial? Difficult?) Why or Why not? Would you recommend this to others? Why or Why not?

Answer: I found this experience to be totally relaxing for my mind and body. There was one point in the exercise that became overwhelming for me but since I had chosen a place of solitude I could allow myself to react to whatever feelings I had. Towards the end where you envision people you have difficulties with or consider your enemy revealed to me people I never even thought of in that way before. I really need to find out why I thought of them at that particular moment. I will continue to do this exercise as often as I can. It showed me how much I need to really start focusing on me and my own inner peace. My daughter who is away at school is currently experiencing a difficult time, she is a resident assistant at her college and it is very stressful for her. I know that this would help her.

Question 2- What is the concept of Mental Workout? What does the research indicate are the proven benefits of a Mental Work Out? How can you implement mental workouts to foster your psychological health?
Answer: (1). The concept of a mental workout is to gain the maximum benefit from contemplative practice(Dacher, pg.65) much like a purposeful physical exercise(training) for the body improves the heart and overall health; The mind also needs a “workout” or training. (2). Research studies indicate that when go through either physical or mental training and stop the results will diminish and we will see a drop off in our conditioning and perseverance is necessary to gain or maintain desired results.(3). Now that I see how much this process helps me to relax I will try to incorporate some of the techniques used in this unit in my daily life or at least a few times a week. I know that in order to really “foster” psychological health I will have to commit to it like regular exercise.

Unit 3

Unit 3

1.
Based on your reflections, and on a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being optimal wellbeing), where do you rate your A-physical wellbeing, B-spiritual well-being, C-psychological well-being? Why?
A.)-Physical wellbeing- I rate my physical well-being as a five because at my age I have no major debilitating diseases. I do not smoke or drink alcohol, except for an occasional drink at social events. My lack of exercise and proper diet are two things that I need to work on. B.)Spiritual well-being-I'd rate this as a 8. I couldn't get through a day without my faith. No one is perfect and improvements can always be made. I will take more time for myself and my own needs. C.) Psychological well-being- This is going to be rated a 4. I think this is the area where I need the most work. If I can get my head together the body logically will follow. I know what I have to do, I just have to make the time to do it.

2. Develop a goal for yourself in each area (physical, spiritual, psychological).
A. Physical- I plan to increase my activity level by walking at least 30 minutes at least three times a week. I will lose 10 pounds before Thanksgiving.
B. I will increase the amount of time I spend in quite meditation.
C. I will reserve one day a month that is specifically for my own needs.

3. What activities or exercise can you implement in your life to assist in moving toward each goal? I will try harder to say, “yes I am” when one of my siblings asks, “are you busy?”
I will try to make more time for myself each day.

4. Describe your experience. (What it beneficial? Frustrating? Etc.) I believe the experience was beneficial. The time I spend doing school work is usually the only time that I spend exclusively for myself. I actually felt so relaxed, I started to fall asleep. The only negative thing was the predictability of the sequence.

Unit 2 Reflective statement

I really enjoyed the relaxation technique. I made sure it was done when I knew I was very stressed, actually I had a headache. Whether it was the exercise or the time I took laying down to complete it my headache was relieved..not completely gone when it was done. I look forward to what's in unit 3.

Unit 2

Hello,

I'm new to blogging and trying to get the hang of it. I'm amazed that I've gotten this far. Although this class seems a little stressful to me, I'm sure in a few weeks I'll have the hang of it. Everyone seems very nice and I love hearing/reading about what you are doing with this wonderful life you've been given.
